The Louvre and Giuseppe Penone

Germination. Giuseppe Penone for the Abu Dhabi Louvre

Germination is a collection of three works that Giuseppe Penone created specifically for the Louvre Abu Dhabi. The great Italian artist explores the relationship between humanity, art and the natural world.

These works are closely connected to the idea of universal art, which is the foundation of the museum's layout. In one of these works, Propagation, there is a porcelain disc with the fingerprint of Sheikh Zayed bin Sultan Al Nahyan at its center. From this fingerprint, a series of concentric circles, all hand-drawn with millimetric precision, radiate outward like the rings of a tree or the ripples in water to the museum's dome (a masterpiece of architecture and engineering by Jean Nouvel).

The lines traced on the porcelain symbolize the influence the museum will have on Abu Dhabi and the culture of the entire UAE.
